Apprentice Spotlight: Farih

Meet Farih Johnson, a Ward 6 resident and ASU Local student who’s shaping her future through hands-on experience and bold opportunities. As a CareerWise DC HR apprentice, Farih brought her curiosity and passion for helping others and solving complex problems to a role at Equal Justice Works, where she supported both HR and programming. Her work—from helping lead the organization’s career fair to learning how to manage complex tasks—has equipped her with critical, transferable skills and a clearer path forward. In this Q&A, Farih shares how her apprenticeship helped her grow, gain confidence, and thrive:

What inspired you to apply and join the apprenticeship program?

I was told about the role at school and it seemed like an interesting opportunity. I was excited about the support that the program offered.

Can you share a specific project or task that you were assigned during your apprenticeship that you feel significantly contributed to your growth? What project or task are you most proud of accomplishing?

The work that I did for the Equal Justice Works Career Fair significantly contributed to my growth. It was the first task that really required me to manage my task, time, and projects efficiently. It also involved a lot of collaboration and taught me a lot about working with different management and work styles.

Looking back, what was the most valuable skill or knowledge you gained during your apprenticeship?

The most valuable skill I learned during my apprenticeship was how to be confident in the workplace. I was always nervous and unsure before, but the guidance from my Careerwise coaches was incredibly helpful.

When did you complete your apprenticeship, and what is your current role and employer?

I was an apprentice from December 2023 to January 2025. I am now working in the Network Engagement unit as the Community Engagement Coordinator with Equal Justice Works.

How did your apprenticeship prepare you for the responsibilities of your full-time role?

My apprenticeship prepared me by giving me confidence to succeed in my present role. I was also given an opportunity to work full-time for part of my apprenticeship and that helped prepare me for a full time schedule, which I previously found daunting. During my apprenticeship, I had many opportunities to grow, develop, learn, and play in a more controlled environment. This experience was incredibly beneficial, as it allowed me to show my team how capable I truly am, and I was allowed to do even more exciting work as time went on. So, by the end of my apprenticeship, my duties were very similar to what I am currently doing now.

What skills or qualities do you believe your employer valued most that led to your full-time employment?

I think they valued my flexibility, problem-solving, positive attitude, and willingness to learn and try new things.

How has your network expanded as a result of the apprenticeship and now, full-time employment?

My network has expanded a lot! I have been offered incredible opportunities and met fascinating people. I have also developed invaluable mentor relationships.

How do you feel your apprenticeship has shaped your career goals?

My apprenticeship has shaped my career trajectory for sure. I am studying urban planning, but my work in programs during my apprenticeship has helped me realize how much I enjoy this work, as well. Initially, I viewed my position at Equal Justice Works as a temporary step before I start my career in planning, but I plan to stay and hopefully work on our Housing Justice Program.

What advice would you give to youth considering applying to a CareerWise apprenticeship?

Ask questions and have a positive attitude! Getting excited about the work goes so far, and I believe a willingness to learn is an invaluable trait to possess as an entry level employee. Curiosity can take us far, and I think employers recognize that, as well.
